AYANEO 2 vs. Steam Deck: A Comparative Review
As an avid gamer, I was excited to compare the AYANEO 2 and Steam Deck handheld gaming consoles. I purchased both devices with the intention of giving each an equal opportunity to impress me. After spending several weeks with both, I can cut to the chase and confidently say that the Steam Deck is the superior option, why you may ask?
Let's start with the AYANEO 2. The device promised twice the performance of its predecessor, a high-resolution screen, and hall effect thumbsticks. Windows compatibility and responsive customer service were also advertised. I was drawn to the idea of a device that could run all of my PC games and promised top-of-the-line performance in a portable form factor.
However, I quickly encountered issues with the AYANEO 2. Reports of quality control issues surfaced on the AYANEO 2 Discord channel, including SSD failures, wonky thumbsticks, and problematic screen bleed. My unit had a thumbstick that was not centered, making gameplay frustrating at times. I was disappointed to find that the customer service was slow to respond and ultimately unhelpful in addressing my issue.
In terms of performance, the AYANEO 2 did deliver on its promises to some extent. It was capable of running most games I threw at it, and the high-resolution screen was impressive. However, the device runs hot and loud, which detracts from the overall gaming experience. The hall effect thumbsticks were a nice touch, but the wonky one on my unit made me wonder about the overall quality of the device.
On the other hand, the Steam Deck's software experience is excellent. The OS/UI is seamless, and the Steam button allows for quick and easy access to voice/text chat, achievement tracking, and game closing. The touch screen is a nice addition, and the controller feels perfect. I found myself reaching for the Steam Deck every time I wanted to play a game, partly due to the device running cooler and quieter than the AYANEO 2, partly because it offered such a pleasant console-like experience.
It's important to note that purchasing a Steam Deck is not without its risks. I encountered some quality control issues with two of the four units I received, such as noisy thumbsticks, screen bleed, noisy fans, and a stuttering OS. These issues were more prevalent in the 512GB models compared to the 64GB models in my experience. However, the Steam Deck's benefits far outweigh its downsides.
In conclusion, while the AYANEO 2 has made improvements since its previous version, the device is still lacking compared to the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck's superior software experience and overall quality make it the best option for PC gaming on the go. While the AYANEO 2 has some impressive features, the quality control issues and lackluster customer service make it a risky purchase that I cannot recommend.
